One of the most unusual and world renowned accommodation options at Cradle Mountain is the facilities and surrounding area at Discovery Holiday Parks. This is a beautifully situated camping and fishing lover’s paradise, located within the heart of the wilderness in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair Heritage area on the western coast of Tasmania. This stunning natural environment is only a 2 1/2 hour drive from Launceston, or 1 1/2 from Devonport.

Discovery Holiday Parks is the premier wildlife and wilderness appreciation site in western Tasmania, and has a sterling reputation throughout the rest of Australia as well for its combination of breathtaking mountain, forest, and lakeside scenery. Guided fishing, hiking, and sight seeing tours are a mainstay of the Park’s regimen. The nearby lakes and creeks abound with fish, and the woods are filled with many exotic and rarely seen animals (especially from the viewpoint of foreign tourists) such as cockatoo, wombat, koala, and the world famous Tasmanian Devil.

Accommodations range from simple caravan and camping sites to fully equipped and modern cabins. There is a centralized kitchen area for general guest usage, BBQ facilities, onsite liquor shop, and laundry area. Due to variability in its weather pattern (par for the course on mountain tops) Cradle Mountain is unfortunately not the best place for mobile phones to function, pay phones are thoughtfully provided. There is also full access for those with disabilities (wheelchair ramps and the like).

Discovery Holiday Parks are perhaps best known as the only camping site on Cradle Mountain. This is the premier area to “rough it” in tent or sleeping bag. Although, should you choose, to come in from the rain or the cold, the cabin facilities are very affordably priced, and fully stocked. Overall, however, this park is primarily meant for serious outdoors enthusiasts rather than more casual tourists who are merely looking for a day out of town.
